1. Safe Locations for Subcutaneous Insulin Injections

Insulin is injected into the subcutaneous fatty layer beneath the skin. The primary recommended sites include:

  1. Abdomen: Avoid a 2-inch circle around the navel. Absorption is fastest here.
  2. Thighs: The outer front area of the thighs offers consistent, moderate absorption.
  3. Upper Arms: The outer fatty tissue on the back of the arms can be used with assistance.
  4. Gluteal Area: Suitable for long-acting, slow-absorbing insulin formulations.

2. Why Site Rotation is Essential

Repeated injections at the exact same spot can lead to lipohypertrophy (fatty lumps under the skin), which prevents smooth insulin absorption and causes erratic blood glucose swings.

Recommendation: Always rotate injection sites at least 1 inch apart from your previous injection spot.

3. Insulin Storage Rules & Guidelines

  • Keep unused insulin pens in the main refrigerator compartment between 2°C and 8°C (never freeze).
  • In-use insulin pens can remain at room temperature (below 25°C) for up to 28 days.
  • Gently roll cold insulin between your palms to bring it to room temperature before injecting.
